The Los Angeles Lakers have finally clinched a record-tying 17th NBA Championship on Sunday with a victory (106 to 93) over the very game Miami Heat which sealed the deal on both team’s best-of-seven title series — ending at four wins to two.
This victory is seen as a restoration of the storied LA Lakers franchise to the top of the American basketball world.
Another NBA Championship For The Record Books
The latest Lakers’ championship victory has allowed the world-famous team to garner a tie with the Bolton Celtics for most NBA championships won. And this victory is also capped off with an unprecedented season impacted by the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic that has seen the 2020 NBA season shut down for four months — and only resuming at a spectator-free locale in July.
Finals MVP LeBron James led the Lakers to victory with a 28 point score, 14 rebounds, as well as 10 assists while also spearheading a successful defensive line that doused any hope for Heat’s offence.
The Lakers, who have been on a championship drought since 2010, also got a significant contribution from Rajon Rondo as the veteran point guard offered key offensive bursts which allowed the team to secure a 28-point halftime lead over the Heat. The opponents never threatened again after that.
The championship win also ended a more than 90-day stay for the Lakers inside the NBA’s bio-secure bubble which was implemented to help reduce the risk of contracting the coronavirus.
It’s also the culmination of an emotional season for the franchise team after Lakers legend Kobe Bryant’s unfortunate and untimely death in a helicopter crash alongside his 13-year old daughter and seven others near Los Angeles in January.
